If you’re looking for a quick, easy stop in San Pedro that’s a little different from the usual beach and snorkeling routine, the Iguana Eco Sanctuary is a fun place to check out.
It’s not a big attraction, and you won’t need a lot of time, but it’s a unique chance to see green iguanas up close and get some great photos.

What Is the Iguana Eco Sanctuary?

The Iguana Eco Sanctuary in San Pedro is a small, independently run outdoor space where you can see a surprising number of green iguanas resting or wandering around.

A short dirt path winds through the space, with a few spots where the iguanas tend to gather—like a large pile of fruits/vegetables and a small wooden dock where they stretch out in the sun.

It’s not a polished, commercial attraction, but that’s part of what makes it feel a little more interesting and low-key. It’s the kind of place where you don’t need a plan. Just wander a bit, look around, and enjoy observing these fascinating reptiles.
Our Experience at the Iguana Sanctuary
First Impressions
Jim and I walked to the Iguana Sanctuary from our hotel, about a half mile away. It’s located at the end of a vacant gravel lot, tucked into a small corner on the west side of the island.

Step onto the dirt path and within seconds you’ll know you’re in the right place—iguanas are everywhere, on the ground and in the trees.

You’ll smell it too. A pile of old fruit and vegetables sits near the center of the sanctuary, and it’s…hard to miss.

Seeing the Iguanas Up Close
Some were completely still, blending into their surroundings, while others slowly moved around or climbed up into higher spots. Up close, you’re able to see that their textures and colors are really interesting and beautiful.

Photos from the Iguana Sanctuary
This ended up being one of my favorite photo stops in San Pedro.

Between the detail in their scales and the way they just sit and pose, it’s an easy place to get some really unique shots.
